In Ethiopia, a tradition known as Ukuli Bula is normally done as part of a Rite of Passage ceremony for boys when they reach manhood.
This strange ritual which was captured by photographer Jeremy Hunter equally sees women begging to be whipped to show love/sacrifices for their male family members who are undergoing the transition ritual from boys to adulthood.
The Hamar boys must undergo two rituals: circumcision and a leap over the bulls. This determines whether the they are ready to make the social jump from youth to adulthood.
After the ceremony held in the Omo River Valley, the boy becomes a man and is now allowed to marry.
Moreso, after the whipping, the same tradition allows those women to call on help from those who flogged them if they are ever in need of help.
The Young Hamar women sometimes also coat their bodies with butter to lessen the effect of the whipping.
